“ it seemed fitting for me as well, [and so I have decided] after having carefully searched out and investigated all the events accurately, from the very beginning, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus” ~ Luke 1:3

All of the writers of the gospels can be considered teachers and of course Jesus was the greatest teacher of all time. Scholars are motivated by study and learning. They do a lot of research and are diligent and thorough. On the down side, they can become prideful about their knowledge and act like a know- it- all. Scholars can allowed their need to know to come before their relationship with God by learning about God but never experiencing Him with their heart.

Teachers’ Strengths:

  • knowledgeable and engaging
  •  very intelligent
  • desires to gain as much knowledge as possible
  • enjoys researching
  • able to validate information
  • can present truth systematically
  • thorough
  • self-disciplined
  • will seek to clarify misunderstandings

Misapplication of the gift: Know-it-all

  • have an answer or response for everything
  • learning can become a sense of pride
  •  they often know what to do intellectually but fail to do it
  • their need to question and challenge ideas can make them come across as negative or cynical
  • they tend to give more information than is required
  • know how to take care of everything and everyone
  •  intense need to put knowledge and wisdom on display
  •  want people to see how valuable you are
  • can monopolize a conversation
  • argumentative
  • their response is often ‘I know’ and then will monopolize the conversation

Root Causes:

  • low self-worth, lack of confidence
  • insecurity
  •  feelings of inadequacy

Limiting Beliefs:

  •  If I show people how much I know they will love me

  • knowledge is power
  • never stop learning and growing

Indirect Effect on Health/Feelings of Discontent:

  •  sense of hopelessness, helplessness
  • sense of worthlessness
  • will put their intellect above the Holy Spirit
  • difficulty with intimacy- not letting people get too close
  • seek approval and validation

Direct Effect on Health:

  • will read about and learn about health and weight loss strategies but not take action
  • will reject information when its presented
  • will pretend to already know how to lose weight but give excuses why their circumstance is different and therefore won’t work
  • uses knowledge as an excuse to not take action

Effect on Relationship with God

Scholars are quite knowledgeable about the bible but their knowledge can get in the way of truly knowing God and trusting Him instead of their own intellect. They may also know what God wants but fail to take action.

Reset for the: Teacher/Know-it-all

Area to Focus: Focus on God’s wisdom and love

1. Morning Prayers:

“You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”~ Deuteronomy 8:17-18a

“Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar”.~ Psalm 138:6

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.””~ James 4:6

“ But whatever former things were gains to me [as I thought then], these things [once regarded as advancements in merit] I have come to consider as loss [absolutely worthless] for the sake of Christ [and the purpose which He has given my life]. But more than that, I count everything as loss compared to the priceless privilege and supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord [and of growing more deeply and thoroughly acquainted with Him—a joy unequaled]. ~ Philippians 3:7-8

2. Phrases/declarations to recite

• I can take action without knowing all the fact

• I am loved just the way I am

• I don’t need to know

• I am loved and admired by God

• I have nothing to prove

3. Renew your mind

Lord, I thank you that my greatest desire is to know YOU intimately and earnestly. I see myself as valuable and beautiful just as you see me.

4. Re-education of who I am

  • I am God’s coworker (2 Corinthians 6:1)
  • God’s power works through me (Ephesians 3:7)
  • I am completed by God (Ephesians 3:19)

5. Long term strategy

• treat new experiences as an opportunity to learn instead of assuming that you already know it

• practice not responding even though you might know the answer

• in conversations, learn to focus more on listening to others instead thinking about your response

• learn to laugh at yourself

• build your confidence in God, not in yourself

6. Mindset shifts

If your taking care of others more than yourself then you’re not truly loving them. You’re being selfish- if you have not mastered it then you don’t know it and it actually makes you sound unintelligent.
